If each group insurance renewal seems outrageous and / or disability cases seem to multiply, health promotion and screenings in the workplace can be a key solution element to improve the situation.

Health promotion at the workplace is a powerful tool to reduce health related costs. It is one of the only ways to deal with the source of the problem: employee fitness. This method relies on a simple concept: educate individuals to change harmful habits and promote changes which are beneficial for health.

Screenings conducted at the workplace allow to identify individuals at risk for or suffering from a non-diagnosed condition. This allows to intervene before observable signs appear or the condition becomes too serious.

Although this may seem like an innovative approach, US employers have started applying these principles for approximately 20 years to fight against exploding health costs. Unfortunately, an insufficient number of Canadian employers have followed this valuable lead so far, despite proven results.

This approach may reduce the risk for developing:
- cardiovascular diseases
- depression
- obesity
- diabetes
- various cancers
- contract an infectious disease

Are you aware that…

- Cardiovascular diseases are the primary cause of death in Canada

- Two Canadians out of three (66 %) are at risk of developing a cardiovascular disease as a result of their lifestyle, including their nutritional habits.

- Over 50 % of cancers  could be prevented with a healthy nutrition, a moderate alcohol consumption, an adequate level of physical activity, a safe exposure to sun rays, and by avoiding tobacco and second hand smoke. Source : Canadian Cancer Society

- 48% of Canadians are either overweight or obese. Obesity is directly linked to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes (85% of diabetics are obese), to cancer, and to many other severe illnesses.

- Over 44% of Canadians feel highly stressed. One out of five will suffer from a mental illness during his or her lifetime.

- Mental illnesses, including burnout and depression, currently constitute the second most important disability cause throughout the world.

- One Canadian out of five suffers from hypertension. Approximately 40% are unaware of it.
